Clutch Noises!
 

Hi All!

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a little 'niggle' of mine?

When setting off, quite rapidly, from a standstill my '03 749s makes, what can only be described as, a graunching noise!
The bike has a Bucci slipper cluch fitted and until now I thought that it was just the clutch giving a little as I fed the clutch out!
This, it seems, is not the case as i went out today with a friend who has owned a 749 and currently has a 999 and he tells me that both of his bikes make the exact same noise? :(

Can anyone comfirm whether this is a brand trait, is it particular to the '9 model range, or, God Forbid, is it particular to my bike!!:mad:

I'm afraid they all do that sir!

Happens to loads of them, especially so when a slipper clutch is fitted.

I have had three different clutches on two 749/999s and they all made that noise but only when slipping the clutch for a quick start or while holding the bike/pulling away on an incline.

Do not worry about it.

Store the sound in the part of your memory labelled, normal nothing to worry about !!! NOW !!!

If this isn’t possible take off the clutch cover, undo the springs and take out the plates and friction plates, in the order they are fitted. Clean all the dust off the basket and the plates and re install
In the same order.

Go out and enjoy the sound of silence for a couple of days and its back bugger’

When it starts to get really grabby or slips, get new plates, if the edges of the basket are badly toothed,normally on the drive side of the basket, it’s a new one of them to.

Dry is noisy end of.

If you can learn to use the “that’s normal, sounds like it’s going to fall to bit’s but doesn’t” part of the brain.

You will enjoy your bike to the full

what sort of life would be expected from an averagly riden 749 clutch. I have done 4500 miles on mine

I have only ever had to change a clutch once,....and that was on a 20,000 mile 851.:)

I've had one set of replacement plates in a hard ridden 22,000 mile ST2

Wondered what that noise was, only happens when the bikes hot and been riden for quite a few miles in one hit. So far I've just ignored it hoping that a serious problem doesn't rear it's ugly head.
Thanks for the reasurance, a dodgy tickovers bad enough without clutch problems as well specially if I'm on one wheel at the time.
