750SS cutting out

Hi all,

Just bought my first Ducati, a 91 750SS. 16k miles, recently serviced, cheap! Collected it yesterday, and planning to use it mainly as a track toy.

Took it out for a first spin this afternoon - mostly good, starts and idles easily, clutch is smooth, gearbox good, revs cleanly throughout the range, handles cleanly, brakes fine. Cosmetically scruffy, but it'll clean up

One small problem, however. Two or three times when the engine was getting hotter, it started cutting out - felt like it was running out of petrol, didn't want to rev. Slowed it down, let it cool a bit, and all was fine again.

What could be causing this? What should I be looking at? (At this point I should mention that I am mechanically 'amateur', so small words, please!)

Cheers.

I sure I read something like this where the fuel was evaporating inside the carbs or something, but that doesnt seem likely, could it be **** in your fuel?
I'm afraid I dont get to use mine enough to have encountered any similar problems.
Oh, and have a look here for some local help and meet ups.

Maybe see you around sometime on my 'cosmetically scruffy' SS750

Check the fuel tank breather. I know some people have had problems with this. When you get the symptoms open the fuel cap and see if this cures it.

Also make sure the fuel lines under the tank are not pinched.

maybe the plugs overheating-- check you have the correct grade/gaps etc..a lean mixture may make the bike run hot and then the plugs would suffer
maybe the fuel filter may want changing- otherwise what daveg and herb suggests

Bingo. Breather hose was kinked, under the frame. Easy when you know where to look....

New tyres and chainset happening as I type, should be all set for the weekend
