Cooling system on a 996

I've just added just over 2 litres of coolant to my bike, I ran it so that the coolant could circulate and watched the temp rise.

First off, how do I know it is all correct and everything is pumping around as normal?
Secondly, the temp gauge went to just below 3/4 and the fan didn't kick in, sould it have?
And lastly, there was an awfull lot of light smoke, now I did manage to spill a bit of coolant down the front and the engine did get a bit of a clean with WD40 over the winter so is this to be expected?

Many thanks

Dave
