oil level

I've always been a bit unsure about what the oil level should be on my '92 SS. There used to be an ally plate next to the inspection window with MAX on it, and a line which seemed to correspond to the *lower* mark on the crankcase cover, but it was worn and not very clear. Am I correct in thinking that it's the upper mark on later models? Does anyone know if Ducati changed the sump design? The oil is only just visible at the lower mark.

Thanks,
Pete

Behind the sight glass there are two wee holes in the back plate at either side, the MAX line is just at the top of them. Top up before the level reaches the bottom of the sight glass.
