I am doing a Lands End to John o'Groats ride for charity sometime in the summer.

It's hardly an original idea but if it raises money for a good cause (and i don't mean Sunderland football club in this case) who cares.

I'll be covering the costs of doing it myself so all proceeds will go to whatever cause it may be.

I need help in 3 areas please.

1. Nominations for a worthy charity or two.
(possibly Francis House Hospice for children in Manchester) i'd like to something for kids and bring a smile to someones face.

2. Never done this before, does anyone know if it's best to open a bank account specifically for this, i presume this is better than asking people for cash or cheques made payable to me? My customers know me and hopefully trust me, but you lot don't know me from Adam.


3. Loads of money of you lot please. Anything even a quid would all help and would be greatfully received.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

Geordie, Comendations mate. Its got to be the ultimate journey to do in a way, Ive done it twice now and know a route that won't see a motorway at all. Did it in 90/91 as a ten man relay running all the way and still hold the record. Found it cleaner to set up a bank account, so all your monies go through that, whether the're going to this or that charity. Call it what you like i.e. BDG Charity Ride your bank manager should see you all right. Preperation and planning are a good thing, hope fully you may be able to bum a few nights accomodation off some of the lads on site , Plan your route well and if possible seek local knowledge , before we started our run I had nearly covered all our route by recceeing it first although time is not an issue as it was for us nothing worst than getting down on one of the main bridges to find it closed for repair, as I did on the road from Biggar to Moffet. Unfortunetly Im a little way of coarse in South Beds to help with accomadation but if I can help route wise let me no. I'll start the ball rolling with a donation of £15 email an address so I can send it . Regards and good luck 4D

I'll pledge some cash - not sure of the mechanics though. As for a charity The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton which specialises in treating cancer patients of all ages, they have their own charity and you can actually specify that it goes to training the nurses if you want. It's a superb place as my dad was in there for a while.

I've always thought about doing something like this, are you doing on a motor or push bike? A freind of mine has done it on both, not at the same time before some wise crack comes out. He's a parkinson's sufferer and he raised a fair amount of cash for that charity.

Thanks for the advice 4D and respect for running it, how long did that take? Also thanks for pledges of money everyone.

Been to see the bank manager and plans in place to open a seperate bank account.

Am doing it on motorbike rather than pedal bike as the idea is to do it in 1 day end to end, so just need to organise somewhere to stay at each end. Mr de Saverys hotel at Lands End is no doubt a bit expensive. Does anyone know of any pubs/hotels close by at either end.

It would be nice to do it without using motorways, but out of the question in view of the target.

Some of the DSC troops tried this some time ago....arranging a trip round the UK with a Pudsey Bear for Children in Need, but it was too much like hard work and it never came off. I think it's CiN time again, try getting a pack from the BBC and pledging some dosh, might get yourself and the DSC on the telly!

900 odd miles in a day in UK traffic will mean you'll have to 'make steady progress' I suspect, so not sure you'll keep up Mav

Nearer the time, send a U2U to those interested with the route and you'll no doubt find a few of us keeping you company for a few miles in our individual regions. Good luck and put me down for £20
