Still confused on S and SPS model

I know that you all said that the sps was the European model and the S was the US version of the 996. In my Haynes manual i just got, it says that in 2000 (year of my bike) its called just the SPS, and in 2001, the SPS was replaced with the S version. According to this, the S model came out in 2001, but since mine is a 2000 wouldnt that still make it an SPS model? This just adds to my confusion

No!!!

The SPS and S are very different bikes.

The S is a later model and uses the engine of the earlier SPS (minus the Ti conrods), but other than that is very different.

The SPS has many additional carbon parts and Ohlins front and rear (the early ones didn't have Ohlins front though).

It also was a limited edition run and each SPS is individually numbered with a plaque on the top yoke.

The SPS also came with a pair of race 50mm carbon termis, a paddock stand and a cover.

The SPS is a single seat only, the S was a dual seat only (I think).

That's just a few of the differences.... the other difference is the price, you'll pay a lot more for a SPS than a similarly S.

Well mine says 996S on the back, but according to the book, shouldnt come out till 2001 and still be considered an SPS
1. Mine has quite a few carbon parts and has an Ohlins rear shock.
2. Mine does have a stamp on the top yoke that reads 263.
3. Mine is a mono with aluminum brace under seat.

I also live in the US, which some people said the S was the american model as the SPS was the european model.
-So these would make it seem to be an SPS, but it only says S on the back like i said earlier, but also, like i said earlier, the Haynes manual only says that in 2000 there was a 996, 996SPS, and a 996R. In 2001 the SPS was discontinued and replaced with the 996S. Mine is a 2000 model, so as you can see, i'm so confused

If it says "996S" on the seat and doesn't say SPS on the top yoke plaque - then I reckon its a 996S!!!

Does it have a carbon airbox? Does it have a dual seat? Does it have Ohlins front suspension - I reckon not!!!

Its a S fella!!! No doubt an early one, but a S no less.

The US got the 996S before Europe. It was specially produced for the US market wanting the SPS. Because of the emmissions laws, it got an underpowered motor. I've attached a picture of what your US 996S should look like. Hopefully it does.

Europe got the 996S as a gap filler between the bip & SPS - customers wanting the SPS engine with a Bip config.

Anyway - does it look like this vlud or is it a bip version?

The best way to tell is by the VIN. 996SPS models begin ZDM3 ... and 996S models begin ZDM1 ...
