They're not that delicate if properly looked after. They certainly shouldn't burn oil in any quantity, for example. My 2 1/2 year old bike has done 38000m without any serious problems.

I've got one of those "looped band"-type filter removal tools, from Halfords. The band has little "bumps" along it's length to give grip. I think they're about 13-14 quid.

It's never failed me yet...

If you do remove the dowel to re-position the clutch lever, make sure it still clears the indicator OK.

Lubing the clutch lever pivots can make a noticeable difference as well.
