The size in mm is the diametre of the pipework/can outlets.Standard size on 748's is 45mm.You can get 50mm cans,but you need 45-50mm link pipework to make 'em fit.

As Alan said,it could be a loose connection somewhere or a dodgy starter solenoid.If its stilll under warrenty take it to a dealer rather than mess about with it yourself.

Yep,my Multi had new crankcases and front cylinder head under warranty.
Dunno what Ducati are painting the cases with these days but it does´nt seem to last long.
