Can I suggest you get a proper wire clip to secure the hose to the main body and not use a tye wrap, these can and will go brittle and can easily "pop" off.

many years ago i sprayed a new bike with WD40 every day for a week, after that time you get a hard protective crust form that can be washed of with parafin in spring time.

As for your 998 just dying etc, mine does this occasionally since I fitted Termi`s and the new ECU. With mine, I beleive its a mixture problem as it starts up ok imediatly after it shuts...
