Hmmmm, I believe the unit is just a 'pod' that sits in the surround. Dunno about changing the needle - why not try to to remove the outer surround and the glass cover and simply repaint the needle...

I wondered if there were more screws - but Haynes also says there are only 10 and that a soft faced mallet is all that should be needed to 'tap' around and break any gasket seal.
