If you can here the starter turning as skidlids mentioned the sprag clutch is the most likely problem, however if the battery voltage is to low the starter may be spinning too slowly for a worn sprag...

Check with a dealer first but I seem to remember that the part number for the tank was the same for all748/916/996/998 verions, the plate in the bottom of the tank is a seperate item
