It's worthwhile doing a search on here. There have been a number of 748R clutch and throttle control posts. As far as I remember the 748R came standard with a slipper clutch.

The engine was directly powering the fans and not the rear...

a simple suggestion but try repositioning the gear selector using the bar rod adjuster to point the lever further down. When i had the lever too high up the gearbox was exactly as you describe.
