Commuting bike

Further to Ruths thread about the same subject (which i can't find) there is the possibility that i'm going to be changing jobs in the near future (been head hunted!!).

I'm going to be travelling 25 miles each way (mostly M1) and i need to keep costs down to a minimum so i was thinking of one of the BMW (k100/75 or R850 etc) bikes i recommended to Ruth.

So my questions are, Boxer or flat four? What are they like to ride? Typical reliable mileage i might expect? Any inherent problems?

Cheers.
