Yes, I was 38 already. That would've been nuts.

I've had a quick look and see no evidence of blown fuses, bad connections, charring, mice, etc. I'll do some tests over the weekend. I know that the battery voltage is not rising at all when the engine's running.

I've always been amazed at how weedy the ground connection on the regulator is, especially when the fixing bolt screws into a rubber well-nut (or used to on my 92). I changed mine ages ago and fitted a nut & washer between the backplate and wellnut to ensure the ground connction is good even when the regulator wobbles about on the rubber mount. I reckon that's where most regulator 'failures' occur...it's just not a good enough long term bond for carrying a few tens of Amps of return current. Unless I'm missing something, and if I am then shame on me - I'm supposed to be an electronics engineer.
