Val'd is good as well although a bit more expensive at christmas.

it's worth driving out if you can face it, you get to take everything with you and have a great festive season

Hmm considering The drive at the moment, Will probably hire a people carrier as a fammily plus junk In a Alfa GTV for 20 hrs sounds like a national lampoons holiday.

In Switzerland look on the web sites for:
Meiringen Hasliberg - easyJet or Swiss Air Basle - overlooking the Egger
Grächen - easyJet or Swiss Air Geneva - overlooking Matterhorn

Both car free villages and reasonable prices for Switzerland and snow for Christmas!

Austria is more friendly but is generally lower and so maybe the snow will not be there (I've seen green slopes in Austria too many times) - there are a few truely car free resorts which is great for kids and parents but transfer times can be long. Look at:

Gargellen in the Montafon Vorarlberg - long transfer Zurich Swiss Air or BA
Serfaus or Obergurgl in Tyrol - Flights into Innsbruck
Katschberg or Turracher Höhe - RyanAir into Klagenfurt (both these resorts have great Childrens Hotels - even the toilets are lower for the kids)
All car free in the winter.

All resorts mentioned have loads of things to do like sauna swimming sledging snowshoe trekking paraskiing skiing snowboarding curling etc etc.

Have Fun

Went to Val D'Isere for New Year last year......great resort.....huge amount of piste / off piste.....atmosphere in the town was great and the resort appeared to be rug-rat friendly.
