Mood: Fed up with DIY!
Hopefully it is now sorted and this info can help someone else with the same or similar problem.

I removed the battery, followed by the 3 screws (2 at the top and 1 in the base of the battery housing) that release the plastic moulding that houses the battery.
A couple of cables were cable tied to the fan housing. After releasing the cable tie the whole assembly nearest the front wheel can be gently pulled away from the bike. At this point I was expecting to be able to see the relay sitting in what I think was its original housing (see the top circle in the picture). But it is empty and I needed to dig a bit deeper. You can now get to the heat shield at the back of the assembly. This needs to be removed and is held in place by 4 cross head self tapping screws. You can see it lieing to the left hand side of the picture.
The fuel pump/ignition relay is positioned at the bottom left hand corner at the back of the assembly. Shown removed in the bottom circle.
