Hi,am i being stupid or is there a knack to adjusting the chain.I have followed the haynes manual,i measure on it's side stand,put it on the paddock stand,adjust it,put back down and it's to lose.HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did my 748s chain the weekend for the first time too.
I also followed the Haynes manual, straight forward, right first time !

slack off the two bolts, 'C' spanner, anti clockwise (you see the chain tighten) torque up the two nuts and hey presto !

Done mine on the side stand.

There's no knack; it's quite straightforward.
If your chain seems right when you adjust it, but seems wrong later, it's probably because your chain's a bit worn and has some tight spots.

There's no need to use a paddock stand, in fact it's not a good idea, cos you're not comparing like with like when you measure the slack; just put the bike on the sidestand.

And generally people tend to adjust chains too tight: err on the slack side.

echo moto here, probably knackered chain, exactly the same on my monnie at the mo! Think the 916 is the easiest I have ever adjusted, no lining up etc, just brill! altho its best done with two peolpe (in my case)

I prefer somone holding the bike upright, adjusting the chain on the 748 is the easiest I done on any bike.

As above, better to do it when the bike is holding own weight, and if still slack, and been adjusted correctly several times, then time for a new chain.

using the paddock stand helps as you can rotate the wheel to check for tight spots in the chain mark the wheel when and if you find one, then off the paddock stand move the bike till the mark is in line with the axle , check the slack when your sitting on the bike and if it needs it adjust as per the haynes comic
