This comes from direct observation of data.
Like the theory that days are longer in summer because they expand in the heat, whereas winter days contract because of the cold.

All perfectly logical.

There's been an ongoing discussion on the relative merits of Pirates/Ninjas/Hippos for about six months now. Don't know exactly what kicked it off but b3ta (http://www.b3ta.com/) picked it up and it's snowballed.

It's a it silly really, nonsensical, everyone knows pirates kick ass!:
