Rusty petrol tank -inside

can any clever clogs tell me how to remove rust from inside a classic bike petrol tank?
i have some of the stuff you can buy which coats the inside when you eventually do get it all clean inside- but is it any good? and whats best way of getting it clean and rust/muck free??

In the olden days we used to put a couple of handfulls of stone chippings in and shake like bu**ery til your arms dropped off.

Cleans your tank and gives you arms like a gorrilla

i havent tried this myself but it was featured in classic mechanics- as well as a tip of placing ball bearings in the tank and shake to remove loose rust( dont know wether i would try the ball bearings myself)

i think the kit is just a rust inhibitor and coating of zinc phosphate

I had this on a Landrover some years ago.
I used the ball bearing idea to knock off the flaky stuff then used some resin to line the tank - can't for the life of me remember the name of it but it's regularly advertised in Classic Bike & Classic car mags.
To my knowledge, the tank which had the consistency of lace in places when I started out, was still totally petrol tight 5 years later after being abused off road and generally mistreated.

POR 15 Motorcycle Tank Repair kit is what you need.

I used it on my '95 900SS whith excellent results. It includes a metal cleaner, rust convertor which gives a Zinc oxide coating and finally a flexible coating which lines the entire tank. This stuff is good !
