Has anyone successfully fitted the new style clutch slave cylinder to a 916? do I need to change my master cylinder to use this type?

got one off the net, but couldnt get it to work. Faced with a solid lever when fitted. Any ideas? (Ive probably done summat daft)

Someone will be along in a min. to confirm or I think there are several threads on this, but I believe the early and late set-ups have different length pushrods?

I guess the old pushrod is too long?

I had the same problem with my 748 a couple of weeks ago. You need the push rod from the later bike as well. It's longer than the old one.

If you take you slave off and push back the piston the clutch will 'work' for a couple of goes.

I think the rod retials at about £25 though....

Are you running with that setup now? where did you get your pushrod from?

Yeah, my old slave cylinder was so worn I needed to bleed it every 80 miles or so. I heard that the later version was superior anyway so I decided to change to that one. I got a new slave cylinder and actuating rod off e-bay for £25 and £10 respectively, which I thought was spot on.

It was a Bike shop called Riders of Yeovil so they may have more if you want to try them for a rod. I’ve only done about 500 miles with the new set up, but I haven’t touched it since I put it on.

Yes, the symptoms you describe are probably because the actuator rod needs to be longer. What is probably happening is what happened when I fitted an STM slave cylinder to my bike. Because it needed the longer rod the slave piston was pushing out until it hit the boss on the crankcase cover i.e. solid metal so it resulted in a solid lever.

I fitted the STM like that initially because my bike was registered in 2001 and was supposed to have the longer rod (they changed them for 2001 bikes) it turns out my bike was made in late 2000 so still had the short one.

STM supplied a spacer about 10mm long and the same diameter as the hole in the slave, just slipped that in and it cured the problem with the rod. You might be able to do something similar.

Hi there,
Thanks for the replies. I'm a bit confused now though, as I have mailed a guy who sells both the later and earlier pushrods, and he reckons I need a shorter pushrod to go with this cylinder, as the old (longer one) pushes the cylinder open and hence the clutch is open all the time.
I have to say, when fitting it, it does feel like this is happening rather than the cylinder coming up against the crankcase cover (this cant actually happen with the later style slave, as the piston is enclosed and cant pop out).
Can anyone say for definite which pushrod I need???
