I got a nice new Shoei XR-1000 lid at the BMF yesterday, and like a kid with a new shoes, I had to wear it on the way home home, so I left my old Shark lid with Glyn to collect later.

Pros:

It's a lot lighter than the Shark
The visor opening is wider
The chin bar is higher so it's easier to turn your head for 'lifesavers'
The ventilation works
The aerodynamics mean the lid holds itself in the right position for forward viz, so you don't have to use your neck muscles.
The visor can be locked open a touch, very useful for speccy swats who get steamed up easy

Cons:

The high chin bar makes it feel like your chin is hanging out the bottom (it's not, but it feels less protective than the Shark)

The clip to fix the loose end of the strap back to the D-rings is a right old faff

It feels really comfortable off the bike, but after a few miles at moderately high speed the airflow seems to push the whole lid backwards, till your nose is touching the chin guard and it builds a bit of pressure across your forehead. A bit weird.

It's damned noisy...not a lid to wear without earplugs, and it makes the bike sound a lot different, odd but I can hear mechanical rattles and whines I hadn't heard before

It's very marginally tight, but should loosen up a bit and save me from hamster cheek syndrome as it wears

Apart from that:

Since the box is still at Glyn's place, along with a visor insert and what I presume are some rudimentary instructions, can anyone tell me how to get the visor off, just in case I was thinking of calling the Visor Shop to get one of those naughty black ones...purely for off road use officer

jools lift up the visor there is a little clip just large enough to fit your fingertip in pull it down and the visor comes off.

fitting it is the opposite pull it down and clip the visor back in and release the clip can take a few goes if you haven't done it before

I a got a Shoei XR-1000 at the BMF as well....I got the Diabolic....

I have yet to go out with it, but will do tomorrow. I will keep in mind your pros and cons....

Had a Shoei XR (forgot the number) for 4 years now, still in ex condition and fitting perfectly - top helmet.

Also had one before that - that one did it's job on Cadwell's tarmac! (very well)

Are things alot cheaper at the BMF???cheaper than ally pally?

people said ally pally had great deals but i thought everything was all shop price.

I will go next year but its quite a trek for moi.

Depends on what your looking for I suppose...

I did not find any great deal at the Ally Pally, but I got the Shoei at £100 off list price at the BMF...

I did see pretty much the same vendors at both shows though.....Its all about Luck...

bought my x1000 rutter rep at ally pally for 265 including road legal tinted visor.

I was looking for the Rutter rep. Not that I'm a huge Rutter fan, just liked the design, but they either didn't have any or weren't doing big discounts on them. Ended up with the 'Alloy' design which looks pretty cool.



Got it for £240 which is £90 off list and still £50 cheaper than the cheapest discount price I've seen anywhere else.

Depends where you shop around at the BMF. I saw the XR-1000's on other stalls marked up as "From £260" and Migsangel got one for £100 off as opposed to my £90 off. I suppose I could've shopped around a bit more, but the BMF is so huge (and so packed when I was trying to fight my way through the crowds) that the thought of fighting through that lot for an extra hour visiting each and every clothing stand ???? No...I'd rather pay an extra tenner than suffer that. So, I'm happy. Wore it for a bit of a blat last night and I'm getting more used to it now.

I bought the same helmet as Jools at Ally Pally earlier this year, paid £270 including a black replacement visor.

I think its a great helmet, much better all round (better fit, quieter, better quality and a much easier to use visor retention system) than my old Suomy Gunwind - except for that poxy chin strap clip.
