I've got one of the "short" type carbon huggers (I believe it's a DP part), and, I have to say, it's pretty useless as a shock guard. The shock gets absolutely plastered in mud and muck at this time of year.
But then, that's winter riding for you. The original shock's still going strong, so I can hardly complain about its longevity.
