Urgent advise needed

Can you assist,i recently purchased a Ducati 999R privatly from Tamworth. Before buying i carried out all the relavent credit checks which came back clear.

When i had it serviced the Ducati agent in Bury Lancashire they noted the frame had been replaced.

The bike origanally came from Covenry Ducati and after various telephone conversations they confirmed they had reframmed it for the person who purchased it from new.

Does any body know if they are allowed to do this or should they be under a legal obligation to notify DVLA or other govening bodys.

Coventry Ducati confirmed the bike was not a write off but if it was reframed should it have been and are they allowed to stamp the numbers on a new frame?

I think DVLA should have been notified, do the frame numbers match your registration docs ?

Maybe the original frame had something not quite right with it and may have been replaced under warranty, Ducati Coventry should know the reason for the frame replacement. New Frames come without a number and the existing number should be transfered to the new frame then the old frame should have its number removed or the fram destroyed by cutting off the headstock.

So Yes they should be able to stamp the numbers, the question that needs asking is why was the frame replaced. Sometimes it can just be down to the paint job as a warranty component it should be treated no different than say a fuel tank or a wheel, if your brand new bike came with a dirty great big scratch in it somewhere you would want that part replaced under warranty, so why not the frame.

They can and often do frames under warranty or for crash damage, had a KR1S with a hand stamped frame number, contacted Kwak uk & the frame had been replaced under warranty, the dealer stamps the frame up when the bike is rebuilt, no need to contact DVLA, as far as I rememebr.

Why don’t you give Ducati UK a ring and ask them, they will also be able to tell you if it was a warranty claim and what it was.

I have just bought a 996sps which has a hand stamped frame number.I did HPI,DVLA and mileage registration checks. All numbers matched, V5 and HPI check came back clear.Spoke to Dave Robinson at Wandsworth, who told me frame stamping is quite "legite" It just means that the frame has been replaced since the factory fitted one.He has a set of stamps and has stamped frames in the past. The question you need to ask is why?If the frame is cosher and straight, is there a problem? I dont think so,it just causes us to think the worst due to some of our scumbag society who choose to "ring " bikes and rip the hard working sector of our community off.I spent many a restless night deciding whether to buy this bike or not,but if you have done all your homework, and it all checks out, then ride and enjoy.
The only spooky thing is, my bike originally came from Coventry Ducati also!! Have we opened a can of worms???

Theres nothing illegal or dubious about re-stamping the nos on a new frame !!!,especially knowing who supplied it,if it had been done in a private individuals garage, then i be more concerned, personally i wouldn't worry,as Hackets reputation is second to none,& it will certainley have been done for a genuine reason,as jon says, the customer may have been unhappy with the paint/finish etc, after all he'll have paid significantly more than you,i'm sure!,so don't worry.
