Hi,

Sorry to use the DSC for a car related thread, but, I'm hoping that some one may have used or know about the Tom Tom Go 300 Sat Nav package.

I understand the latest software, V5, has speed camera locations on it. If not the official software then the copy stuff from e-bay.

Does any one know if the system is as good as the hype and can you set it to identify camera locations without having to have a route set in the system ? I have a road angel at the moment, which I think is great, if I get the Tom Tom Go 300 can I flog the road angel and get down to one black box on the dash or will I still need them both ?

I think the TomTom Go is very good but it does have it's limitations.

Firstly, the speedcamera database is only as the update that you have installed as it relies on your gps position relative to the camera position. ie it doesn't detect emmission from cameras like your road angel does.

Having said that, the database is very extensive (I haven't come across one that has not been on the database) and it is free (I can post the link if you are interested). Users can upload new cameras as they come across them or are posted on official websites.

The latest update allows you to program in the distance to the camera (or any other POI - point of interest) to give you an audible warning, which was not the case with previous updates.

If your job requires you to drive then I would keep using the road angel, but if you are just a "spirited" recreational driver then the TomTom should do you.

Currently drive around 25 to 30,000mile a year for business.

May go for the Tom Tom Go 300 and road angel.

Can you set the TOM TOM to identify just the speed cameras locations or will it shout out all POI's ? Not to bothered to know when I'm near the bank or supermarket

Can you set it so that it will shout out POI's without having a route set in ?

tomtom will identify the poi's you specify, not all of them and should identify any nearby poi without a route (POI Warner does this)

I use tomtom 3 and a geodesy plus at the moment, but once TomTom 5 for PDA's is released and the camera database is maintained by tomtom I may drop the geodesy.

Worth noting that most new fixed camera's are emissionless as they don't use radar (truvelo & SPECS) and the old one's are already in the database.

Good point about the emmissions Mr S this may make Road Angels and the like redundant if they can't detect all types of cameras - might be better to sell it before everybody starts getting rid of them!

You can set the TomTom to warn on different categories of POIs, different distances before you get to the POI as well as different sounds. Since I do most of my driving in towns and cities, I've set the speed camera warning to the cow mooing sound which definitely gets my attention!
