Is this to do with your "rather large frame" and carrying your missus and luggage on the back that you spoke about in another post? Gotta tell you that an Ohlins unit isn't going to help the bike carry more weight. It's just a shock absorber and won't do anything that the Showa unit you've already got can't do - it's just a more upmarket shock absorber that's a bit better made and offers a finer degree of control than the Showa. All a shock does is control the rate at which a spring compresses and rebounds, to stop you pogoing down the road. It's the spring rate that you'll need to change to cope with extra weight, and not just at the rear...if you stiffen the rear it won't compress as much as the front for a given load and you will then be tipping the bike on it's nose and overloading the front. If I were you I would visit a suspension specialist like Kais, tell them what you want to use the bike for (if necessary go with your missus, fully loaded panniers and all your pots and pans), and get them to upgrade your front and rear springs to suit the all up weight. New springs front and rear (they don't have to be Ohlins) and a suspension set up like that will probably cost far less than the £530 or so that the required Ohlins rear shock alone goes for (and they are like hens teeth secondhand) [Edited on 22-6-2005 by Jools] |
