Happens like that if you hit static objects, i.e metal posts etc.

No protection doesn't help at all!!

I would not advice anyone without a very very very strong stomach to look at that vid.
I feel sick.
there is footage of some pore muppet having his head pulled out from around a fence post.
and it doesn't come away easy,
