Is a new chip required to run Termi slip ons?

Hi guys; great froum you got here. I just picked up a stock 1996 916 with 3200 miles and am going through the bike to sort out any issues (clutch slave anyone?)and also adding a few extras (hugger). This is my first 4V; I have an old bevel 900SS though.

I picked up a pair of new 45mm Termi slip ons and was wondering if I had to rechip the bike to run them. Right now I don't need the extra power - believe me it's quick enough already - but don't want to fit the Termis without a chip if it will harm the bike.
Cheers
Geoff

Welcome geoffp

Don't know about later models but when I fitted Termis to my 851 Woods of Abergele said that the standard chip would be o.k. I would imagine however that they may run better with a modified chip. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will advise you.

Oh, and as you may know it is the custom on here to buy a round of drinks on entry, so I'll have a white wine while you are at the bar thanks very much.

By the way where do you hail from?

Phil

I've just noticed - 1996...3200 miles!!! Where did you find it?

Hi geoffp, I'll have a pint of IPA while you're there, thanks for asking.
The bike will run fine without retuning, but you will always get smoother running (and usually better fuel consumption too) as well as the power gains when you get it set up on a dyno, but it does cost.
With a low-mileage bike, it will be important to establish when the belts were last changed, because as they are made of rubber, they can 'set' if not used regularly, and as they are responsible for the health of your heads, its cheaper to change them sooner rather than later, and it _is_ a job anyone who looks after a bevel will be able to do :-))

Thanks for the replies guys; don't be impressed by all that Bevelology you hear about. They're just Meccano sets really!

I'm a Brit but live in Houston TX, good ol' USA. At least for a while anyway. The US has quite a few low mileage bikes in great condition for sale (that's whay I bought an old, crap UK imported '76 900SS to restore then isn't it?!) I picked this 916 up on eBay a couple of weeks ago for UKP4500 - the guy I bought it off is also a Bevelhead known to me so I trusted him. All bone stock, perfect, dry miles, without even the chip disturbed, no carbon, nothing, original front tyre fitted. I've always had a hankering for a Cagiva graphics bike, with the hand build mythology (if the Bevel Guido built it perhpas not!). I see it as a future classic.....one day I'll bring it back to blighty. one day....

But it still needs to be ridden. And yes I will change the belts, perhaps even pop the valves and check for flaking rockers. And definitely service the clutch slave, and change the fluids, and and and.

Shurely itsh cushtomary for visitorsh to be BOUGHT drinksh??
Cheers
Geoff
