Is there not a cdi type conversion for an early Beetle ? they were 6v electrics. May be able to make it fit your ford as a last idea.

My first car was a 1959 sit-up-and-beg Ford Popular with a 3 speed crash gearbox, cable operated drum brakes and yes, 6 volt positive earth electrics.

I would have thought that you could source a coil from something like this - cos I think your best bet is a temporary fix involving taking the original coil out of circuit and using another one in it's place. Should be easy enough to modify the primary connections shouldn't it?

They are in Redhill. Real time warp of a place. Not a pc or calculator in sight. Run by very elderly auto electrical encyclopedias.
May be of help

Yep Alan, they are the ones! Must be a few years since they were sold though what with most cars these days having electronic ignition as standard.
Didn't know they wouldn't work on 6v though.
