The whole point of the liquids thing - the plot that was discovered involved liquid explosive. So only liquids bought airside go in the cabin. Seems fairly logical to me. But I'm sure there's plenty of loopholes via catering staff etc. Bit of a pain for people like me who like to travel light and not check luggage if I can help it though.

So why is there a new restirction on the size of hand luggage? The smaller size that they are allowing is, oddly enough, the same size as a laptop bag. This should keep the all important business travellers happy. But you are not allowed to take on hand luggage that was previously allowed. Obviously the size of bomb you can fit in a laptop bag is not large enough to cause serious damage, whereas larger hand luggage is more unsafe.
The airlines are taking this opportunity to reduce the size of hand luggage, something that they have been trying to do for years but have found difficult to do so far. Now they have an excuse.

As an airline employee...no comment!

Yep you can take liquids aboard, but only if they have been bought 'air side'.Just to confuse matters, other countries have differant views on what you can and cannot take onboard as hand luggage.I think the rules may have been relaxed slightly in the UK but Italy still wont let you take on anything that can be regarded as 'electrical'.That is your mobile, portable games console, electronic car keys, etc. You can take bags aboard but they are heavily scrutinised if you are travelling back to the UK.The whole process seems to make the time needed to catch a flight double so patience is a virtue!
