If you wanna nip down to halfords and get a socket to remove the wheel, what size is the nut?

Yup, 46mm. Normally they only have in stock the 1/2" impact version. No problem there. Best to grind the rounded bevel type edge off so you get the maximum grip. Best few quid you can spend. Don't forget the torque wrench or scaffold pole.

46mm, and get your local machine shop to grind it down to the same height as the faces on the nut.

I strongly recommend getting a 3/4 inch drive socket and a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar. I broke/bent the following trying to remove mine:
2 x 1/2 in breaker bars, 2 (good) 1/2 in ratchets, 2 x 1/2 in tommy bars.
3/4 bar inch makes it easy.
