Hi, I'm Mark. I live in Germany and am in the Army. I recently got an offer for a rather tired 996 in need of some TLC with 22k on it. Got it for a good price but haven't picked it up yet, cant wait!

I have owned 5 GSXR 1000s and 2 SP1s in the past so am no stranger to twins, although this one is going to be a fair bit slower than my last GSXR! But then these have so much soul i am quite happy.

I will be doing the belts and service myself and have already bought them and the FACOM tool. Assume i aqm right that the no4 button is the one required?

Look forward to using the site and maybe making a few rideouts when i get back from Germany!

Oh, are you sure it's slower than your GSXR, mmmm think that's down to the rider.

FACOM tool no good then? Bugger! Pretty sure the GSXR was quicker

Good watching a lap around there again, even tho' you missed every apex. I have 25 laps under my belt, in fairness to you it was busy and you gotta give cars best at bends.

Well spotted! After the GT2 went under me i was rather nervous about every man and his dog undertaking! Love it there and when she's ready the new bike will get an outing. I'm sure with everything happening a bit slower i can hit those apexes...

I used a Snap-on tool for a couple of years, the FACOM tool is a copy of the Snap-on one so depending on the quallity it might be OK.

Sorry Mark just messing with your head.

Of course the Gixer is going to be faster with around 40hp more than the 996 but I think you will really love the way the 996 handles.

If you feel more comfortable with the tension tool then use it. As Phil say's after a few belt changes you get a feel for it.



Along with the belts get the alternator nut checked/re-torqued.

Lol! Thanks for the tip. I take it you just torque it up to the right torque rather than need some amazing Ducati only tool?

Yep, can't just remember if it's 32 or 36mm but it really needs to be a long reach socket either way.

If you are doing a full service it may also be worth checking the valve clearances and the condition of the chrome on the rockers particuarly the openers.

Roger that! It has already had a new big end and camshafts on the front cylinder so will have a good look!
