SORN - Fines ....

What am I going to be fined? I think Tim had this last year from memory ...

I'm putting the 996 on a SORN BUT, I've only just found out about having to have this done within 14 days of your tax running out. So I'm 14 days over that now

So how much am I going to be fined?

There are some STUPID rules in this country ....

I know I know, Heathrow is just down the road .... stay on topic!

The notes on the back of the V11 say that "If you do not relicense or make a SORN declaration you could be fined up to a THOUSAND pounds(!) or 5 times the annual rate of duty, whichever is greater."
The sad thing is that the folks getting fined are people such as yourself and/or have simply forgotten to tax the vehicle. They dont catch the gits that never tax a vehicle from day one, along with MOT's insureance etc.

The standard fine as long as you vehicle hasn't been spotted on the road is about £25 - 50 quid.

I forgot to send off my SORN paperwork for my bike last year. Think it was something like £25 fine so sent it off with the proper paperwork. Ignore the £1000 fine stuff, it's just scaremongering unless you never declare SORN.

I had my Kawasaki off road but misplaced it , nothing was said. It was genuinely off as no insurance the lot and I didnt want to ride it either. Found form by accident something like 7 months later and took it in . They were fine about it.

Well I've just spoken to the DVLA - you can declare the vehicle SORN over the phone on 0870 240 0010.

They can issue you a fine if they have not received a SORN notice or a tax renewal from 14 days after the tax runs out. The way she explained it was that they can do it from day 1 but only check after 14 days.

I have to write a grovelling letter to my local DVLA office, which is in Wimbledon, explaining how long I've had the bike off the road, why I didn't register it as SORN sooner etc etc and hope they choose not to fine me. BUT, I will have to pay the tax arrears up until the SORN is accepted!

*******S!!!

Just one more point ... this is the second time I've had to phone the DVLA about something since I've been in the country and their customer service and attention to detail has been impeccable, both times. Last time one of the ladies there went way out of her way to help me and this lady tonight was courteous, understanding and just a good all round egg!

You should have called them to question why you hadn't received your Sorn confirmation, as you had posted your Sorn 4 wks ago.

Now, the reason you are Cisco and I am Microsoft is clearly because you are smarter than me!
