Tasty KTM

With the 996 going on a SORN as a track bike/race bike (thinking about doing a few DP rounds next year) I need something for the road.

The main criteria is:
1. Walk up and start it then ride off (rules out any Ducati really)
2. May get scared with a hose once a year for a rinse off (suits my style of cleaning perfectly!)
3. Don't really care about scratching it etc
4. Wouldn't mind off-roading it on the odd occasion
5. Don't want to really spend more than £3k

Besides all that, I'm attracted to the sheer hooliganism of this bike and other SM's. Not that I am your average stunt king - but it's just a bit of fun!

What do you reckon?

KTM's are great, but they're pretty high maintenance which would rule out criteria no1.

There a few really good supermoto's on ebay at the moment, wouldn't mind one myself but I'm saving up for a haircut!

That wouldn't be my haircut your saving up for!

I've heard KTM's are high maintenance and also heard they're not! I don't know what to believe but by god they look like a lot of fun!

I think if you check the specs of that bike you'll find it has no electric start - and booting over a single cylinfer that big I wouldn't imagine would be the easiest task?

Be aware that this is a very quick bike and not for the inexperienced.

Word on the street is that they are quite easy to start, have all the decompression thingies ....

They might be quick off the line, but they don't have 996 style top end. Besides, with the lightened flywheel and the shorter gearing (soon to be shorter ) mine accelerates ok too! I'm not too concerned about that

If you didn't buy the 'R' you could have it and the 998

I'm in no MAJOR rush or anything because it won't go back on the track until next year now. I'd like to think I could do Jerez but just don't know yet.

Now the bike is going on SORN I've got it pulled apart and am slowly cleaning it (properly even!). I'll be putting it back together slowly with a few more bits and pieces on it. ...
