STU - might be the starter solenoid at fault.

Apparently, you need to be brave and arc across the two posts / terminals on the solenoid body - mine easy as I turned the solenoid around so the posts face outwards.

I imagine you'd have to be VERY careful not to earth against something else in a standard setup.

My starter motor was exactly the same - I disconnected the battery and was able to get a ring spanner on the nut while holding the top of the post using long legged pliers - lots of releasing fluid later and all was well.

There was a post on here ages ago recommending a starter motor rebuilder as well that I will check out as I have a spare starter motor that I might well get overhaulled...
