upgrading 996R or 998S

Im thinking of chopping in on one or the other.

there doesnt seem to be very much differance in spec, unless of course you can advise me differantly.

im looking to you guys for advice on what to consider, and what the differances are.

I need more power, so perhaps this could be it.

996R as some more carbon and was hand built in limited edition. If you can find one at a reasonable price and are looking at getting a collector, this is the one to go for.

998s - same specs, less fancy parts, not many about either. Will probably never achieve the exclusive status of the 996R but almost similar to the R to the exception of some carbon and the Ohlins at the front. You would probably get a better bargain on such bike. The one to consider if you are not after exclusivity but just something that does the job and does it very well.

Bungi,

You pays yer money and yer makes yer choice. I can't see the point of buying an S then adding the carbon and Ohlins. With an R you should also get the termis and the ECU for them. The extras you get included make the R better value in my opinion. An S is still a great bike but adding only a few bits of Carbon, Ohlins and termis and you are way above used R money. There may still be a few odd ( yellow?) new 998s in the dealers. I seem to recall seeing one advertised recently.

A Used R will be £10,750 upwards and used S perhaps £10k upwards?? Not a big difference.

If you do got for the R make sure you get the termis, std cans and ECU with it. Should also be a paddock stand of sorts and a cover.

Check out the service history, if there is one due or overdue you need to budget £400 plus for that as well,

Or get a Bayliss/Bostrom....

You get a cover, stand, Ohlins front and rear....

usefull stuff. Im trying to take all this into account and considering resale in a couple of years time looks like the 996r tips the scales so far,

however I was told that the 998s has a couple of very slight engine mods (improvements) over the 996R does any one know what they are or if they are significant, ive got to try to weigh it all up. I am considering the possibility of useing it on track as a competitive bike for just a couple of events.

How much better are the ohlins forks in reality, I know they look the dogs and are more desireable than the showa units, but they seem to be pretty good and havent given me any problems, although the showa rear i know is 2nd rate.

Dunno about engine mods, but my Bostrom has a 54mm system, and runs the 996R ECU for the 54mm system...

I put 998R forks on mine, and Rattlers right they do make a big difference, maybe not as much as mag wheels, but they manage to be firmer yet plusher (strange I know!), they ride over bumps much better than the showas, they also make that cool swishing sound when you pump them up and down
