I get increasingly pi**ed off with this total preoccupation with speed enforcement. Pity there wasn't a copper about yesterday as I was driving to Northampton on the busy A43 dual carriageway. Overtook a woman in a big estate car and wondered what she was playing about at, turned out she was totally engrossed in texting and didn't even look up when I drove along right by the side of her car in my 4x4 with the horn blaring for at least 100 yards. Now her driving was dangerous without any doubt but the likelihood of getting caught is minimal as there are so few police cars out there. Watched the antics of one police car (Volvo estate) in Towcester last evening as the driver tried to park up to get into the chip shop, what a laugh, all over the footpath then up the town to turn round and back to try and park on the opposite side of the road. Ended up going to the other chip shop and making another right horlicks of trying to park.

Yep you see this every day on the way to work no traffic cops in sight. Cameras are just an easy way out. Speeding is probably about the only law breaking thing I will do in my life.

I hope as there was traffic they didn'y try me but then again they prob heard me coming and focused on me

You need to know if it was a Camera safety van or an ANPR van doing checks for tax etc.

Both these vans can read a number plate in dark conditions. They do not use a visible flash but use pulsed infrared and three different wave leanths to read a plate.

Henry - the legislation you're thinking of is the New Drivers Act.

This only applies for the FIRST drivin test you pass, be it car or bike.
Subsequent passes are dealt with as per normal totting up rules.

This affects you if you first passed your driving test on or after 1 June, 1997.

If you reach six or more penalty points within two years of passing your driving test (ie during the probationary period), the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will automatically revoke your driving licence when notified by a court or fixed penalty office.

To regain your full licence you must then:

obtain a provisional licence
drive as a learner
pass the theory and practical test again

Penalty points counting towards the total of six include any you incurred before passing the test, as long as the offence took place not more than three years before the latest penalty point offence.

Points imposed after the probationary period will also count if the offence was committed during that period. Passing the retest does not remove penalty points from your licence, and if the total reaches 12, you are liable to be disqualified by a court.

Thanks Guys i have had my license for a about 7 years now but if I get 12 then Im fooked

Bob Im pretty sure it was camera van, didn't see the name on side but was lwb transit with windows all round, and when I got home the safety camera webiste said they were on this A road that day.

I always check normally after my last 6 points but was a busy day etc and I never thought they would do it late in the eve.

Anyone wana buy a S4r!! only 6 months old

On a different note, does anyone know the situation if the cameras are deployed at sites other than those advertised. Recently around here I have noticed a speed camera van appearing on roads which have not been adertised as being targeted. I guess if you get done you'll get done on the basis that you were speeding anyway, but one of the conditions the use of "safety cameras" is that the locations must be advertised locally. As I see it if they then deploy the cameras elsewhere then they are in breach of these regulations.

The big signs you see shaped like a camera as you enter a force area, or indeeed a local area of that force tend to cover all that!

Are all your points for excess speed?

Can't say for definite for Scotland, but down here they can deploy to either the advertised "targetted" roads or to "complaint" sites where complaints have been made regarding excess speed by residents councillors etc.
I'm not sure of the exact time allowed but any camera setups involved in hypothecation ( paying for themselves by using revenue from fines ) can only allow a small percentage of time to be spent on complaint sites.

Yes they are Andy, why do you ask? I got the first 6 about 18 months ago for 52 in a 30 , and it wasn't a 30 by a school or anything nice biggish road with no houses near road etc. This was before the vans round here had more dayglow markings added
