TP is nearly right, just a bit confused. What really happened was that the Jessies that couldn't play League properly(mainly the "gentry"),kept getting tired and couldn't handle being actually tackled before releasing the ball decied that:
1.If we have more players,we don't have to run so much, because there are more people to cover the pitch
2.If everytime we get the ball,we just kick it back down the field,we get a breather.
3.Instead of actually getting somebody to "Tackle" us(heaven forbid they laid hands on you!) and potentially hurt you,we'll make it TAP rugby whereby you have to release the ball when you are in any danger of getting "Tackled"(you are allowed to lay down before realeasing the ball,so your mates don't have so far to run to pick it up!)
Now if we are REALLY tired,we'll kick it into touch, where we can all line up,get our breath back and when we are ready, throw the ball back into the field of play.
When we are REALLY,REALLY tired,we'll have a scrum.THis is when you all huddle togther until you've recovered(you have a 5 minute chat to agree this, whilst huddled) then release the ball into play, where you can just kick some more points and have another rest.(no point in actually tring to get a try,not enough points to justify the effort when you just kick some more!!).
To persuade people to play Union, they decided it was only fair that they get a litle gift(it wasn't a professional sport,so you couldn't get paid). This normally constituted a 5 bedroom house in Royal Berkshire,a sports car and a Management/directors job in some ficticious company. They were still all amateurs of course!!
The real men kept playing league, those that couldn't hack it,played union.
