IT help, internet connection sharing with XP Pro....
At the moment I have a desktop PC that uses an NTL cable modem for net access using a USB port. I also have a laptop for my wife that from time to time we also want to share the same connection. So all I've done in the past is plug the laptop into the usb connection on the cable modem instead of the desktop and reboot, sorted.

However, wives being wives, mine wants me to move the desktop to a new location for various reasons and this made me wonder if I could do something better....

My PC came with an ethernet card installed and the cable modem also supports this, I've found the net quite a bit faster on my pc using this connection instead. So (finally), can I have my desktop pc connected to the net using ethernet and share the connection to my laptop via a USB port using the connection sharing option in WinXP Pro?

Or is there a better / simpler way?

I'd thought of getting a router or wireless network but, for only two PC's it seems too much bother and my budget is very tight (which in DSC speak means "I'd much rather spend my cash on my bikes" LOL).

Cheers - Frank

You're kind of half way there, but the wrong way round...

You'd need to leave your BB connected via your USB and then get a network card (if you haven't already) for the laptop, and link the PC and laptop via a network carble (crossover), probably go through the XP wizard and hey presto.

So....

BB------USB->PC----CAT5(Crossover cable)----->LAPTOP

Frank, - there is always more than one way to skin a cat. I got a wireless router to plug into my broadband and a wireless card to plug into my PC (my laptop already has wireless bult in) for about £80. That way you can have the house covered for internet signal, - so I could be sitting on the loo right now typing this.....but I am not.
