Just checked a 2002 998 with 17700 miles on it.
It has been for sale for a long time now and i'm just wondering if 17700 miles isn't a lot for a 2002 Duc that has been on the shop for like 5 or 6 months???

What can you tell me about the Ducs service intervals?
What kind of engine services should a 998 with those miles have already done???
Ahh..... and one last newbie question.... does all the 998's have the testastretta engine?

17700 is above average yearly mileage, but Dukes prefer being ridden to sitting about.

If it's been idle for 5 or 6 months it could probably do with an oil change, a change of cambelt and a jolly good service all round, but then it's due one of those anyway in just 300 miles time at 18,000 miles.

Service intervals are every 6000, or every year whichever comes soonest.

Yep, a 998 is a Testastretta - always. 17,700 is higher than average miles and the price should reflect this. If it's got a full Duke service history (main dealer and/or specialist) then I don't see it as a problem. If the price is right!

Service interval is 12 months or 6,000m whichever comes first. So the bike you're looking at should have had:

600m check/oil change
12month/6000m service (small main service approx. £350)
24month/12,000m service (a biggie, including belts approx £600)
36month/18,000m service (small main service approx £350)

The next one should be due in 12 months/6,000m and it's a biggie again at £600.

Is the 18.000 miles service a "big" one (like you have to check or substitute something major) or not?

What bugs me the most is all those miles there............

Don't worry about the miles, as Jules said earlier Duke's prefer to be used and at that mileage it is more likely to have been long distances rather than lots of little short journeys-much better for any engine. My late May 2001 ST4S has 22,000 on it and I did hardly any mileage last year, Anthony Ward has got 40,000 on his ST2 and that's still going strong.

I dont see why people get so hung up on miles these days, Aslongs as its been looked after and has FSH your pretty safe.

As it's virtually due a service, use that as a bargaining chip. Get them to throw a service in. And change the belts as well. And check the rockers for wear. Not saying you'd get all that for free, but they're all things that you need to be doing when you buy a second-hand Duke, and someone's got to pay for it.

Right now I'm changing the oil in my 748, and it's done 41000 miles in 3 years.

Its hard to say what services should be done for that mileage in every case. Some people service more often but less miles. Having said that it should have had at least 2 major services by that mileage, if not more.
