Stay off the crisps / chololate / sugar / alcohol / takeaways / alcohol / cheese / butter for a while.

Bit of light exercise (walking, cycling - NOT gym work !)

1 - 2 lbs a week with virtually no pain (apart from the alcohol)

add to beancounter's suggestion - cut out caffiene, drink 1.5 litres of water a day. Take a benecol fizzy vitamin drink daily too.
You will get a stonking headache for about 3 days if you have never cut out caffiene, but once you do, and are drinking loads of water you will be surprised by how much extra energy you will have. You will also see the whites of your eyes are white again! Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep.
Drinking water will raise your metabolic rate, which burns the fat. I could go on for ages but i wont.
You can always u2u if you want.

Agree mostly with beancounter. It really is as simple as that.

Why not gym work though?

Could do light gym work. It depends if you want to tone up too. If you do I would do no more than 3 times a week. Broad range of free weight exrcises with 12-15 reps.
If you do go for gym work then use a 100%whey protein shake (powder you mix with skimmed milk). It will make up for energy lost. Get a carb free one - most are.
Ideally you should eat 5 small meals a day. Breakfast, shake, lunch, shake light evening meal. That way your stomach get used to little and often rather than 1 or 2 big meals towards the end of the day.kp
Its worth doing. My brother in law lost 3 stone in about 3 months. Gradually introduced carbs and some alchohol at weekends. Give your self time off as a reward.

By gym work I mean circuit training and weights but I would also include running as well.

The energy demands of these activities are too intense for the body to use fat reserves, you just use up the stored glycogen in your body, which you replace with your next meal.

More gentle exercises (like walking or easy cycling) can be fuelled from fat.
