Stripping. A DIY question...No Really!

You know how I love to DIY...well my mission this holiday is to strip the pine bannister to bare wood.
The bannister is covered in that nasty green lead paint (house is 1920/30s)
I have covered with paint stripper and wiped it off with wire wool then sanded it. It just wont come out of the grain...
How can I get it out?...Is there anything other than paint stripper that will take it out?
Puleeeeez help!

you will just have to try harder at the wire wool method i'm affraid, it's a tuff job, but someones got to do it.

Yep have to agree with Red, no other way but elbow grease.
You can try using a copper wire brush with lashings of nitromores. Keep yourself covered especially your eyes.

KB, if you suffer at all from asthma, be careful with this sort of work.
I was hospitalised after spending a day on a similar job.

There is another stripper that dries to moreof a film so you can peel it off, and hence get a bit more out of the grain. It still takes as much time as the other methods, but its worth trying now you've got the worst off.

The other more messy way is to wash the stripper off ... easy with a door

And ... what are you going to do once it's stripped ?
If you are going to use lacquer with a bit of colour ... try a test piece - it might look ok !

Tis true, I am blessed. I have my own guardian angel, sitting on my shoulder (could you lose a little weight Andy, it's starting to ache).

Five or six goes with proper nitromores then sand till arm your drops off.

Also remember that bare wood in a house of that age is a no no, all the woodwork would have originally been painted.

Best bet if you want to strip it is to take the thing apart and get it dipped.

Its kwicker to take the old banister off and put a new on on, or go to an open plan layout and put the banister on the wall.....well thats what I did!
