Can anyone explain cricket to me????????
How can a team that only plays 6 men draw with a team that plays the full 11.
Why would England want to declare knowing that the Ozzies could catch em.

don't bother mate, it really isn't worth the effort ... ten pin bowling or pigeon racing is more interesting .

Vaughan declared because he knew that Aus would have to break the record run chase to win the game. He had to balance getting enough runs on the board with leaving enough time to bowl Aus out but not giving them so much time they could just pick off 1 or 2 an over and play defensively to win. It's a delicate decision to make.

I'd be happy to bore you senseless for hours explaining the intricacies of the game. But I'm sure there's a few on here who think I don't have a clue what I'm talking about ...

I used to play for my town, but still don't understand all this... especially the bit where one team gives up (declares) while they're on a roll.

I did learn that it aint an easy game tho...

Because if they did that, and didn't leave themselves enough time to bowl Australia out then the game ends up in a draw. England don't win.

So they need to make sure they had enough runs on the board to force Aus to bat agressively enough to have to score runs to have a chance of winning so they had more chance of taking wickets. The other side to that coin is, if they set too high a total then the chasing side could look at it and decide it's too much and just play defensively for the draw, making it hard for the bowling side to take enough wickets to get them out and win.

It's a subtle game cricket.

I see, well I think I do. Such a bloody boring game to watch, they have to put intricate rules in to stop you falling sleep.
