what ou have to do on the closers is press the closing rocker down with a screwdriver or similar and measure the gap between the shim and the rocker(making sure the vave is held closed by a wire hook thru the spark plug hole) remember the measurement then take of the wire collets remove the shim and then measure it- if the rocker clearance is greater than thestd clearance then you need a thicker shim there is a calculation to work this out -- i think what you do is subtract the std clearnce from the measured claerance add the measurement of the shimto gain the thickness of the new shim but i aint sure if im right on that-- i got a haynes manual that tells you what what but i havent got it with me if no one turns up that knows better i'll copy it out foryou if its any help-- what engine is it ???

sorry mate just re-read and re-read your post -- yes you measure from the collet recess to the base-- not the full length of the shim---least ways that what the ducati workshop manual says and i measured mine that way and the engine aint blown up yet
