Fitting new cylinder studs
I'm about to embark on a reckless heli-coiling operation to repair a stripped cylinder stud inner thread and will be fitting 4 new up-rated studs, supplied by Baines. I'm tempted to heli-coil all 4 holes, even though only 1 is stripped (a) to make all of them equally strong and not have to go through this palaver again, and (b) to make sure they all have the same load. But what about thread locking ? Do I Loctite the coils and the studs? Or do I Loctite the coils only and wait for them to cure? Or do I do neither and just oil them up before fitting the heads and torquing the nuts?

Also, is the original torque figure for coiled threads and stronger studs valid??

...what I meant was, is the original final torque figure for the OEM studs in threaded ally (39 Nm I think) still valid for the new studs with helicoils ?

Damn, I thought the Nichols website might have had some sort of answer but no go:

Other info is just as sparse - (shouldn't Baines be able to do it / tell you ???)

here is some advice from the Ducati.ms website

"My '95 SS kept breaking the studs (one at a time) on the horizontal cylinder. Foolishly I only replaced the broken stud. Weeks (or months) later another would break. Last one broke INSIDE the case (i.e. nothing showing out of the case, just the top of the thread!! At that point I decided to change all (on that cylinder) in one go. Never had a problem since.

Never had a problem with the vertical cylinder either - but just replaced them all when having a 944 kit dropped in.

I believe the 916 studs are the replacement item from Ducati"

Thanks Frank. I was going to get on the blower to Baines first thing tomorrow before I dive in. These pressing questions occurred to me only this evening.

I was reading Chris Kelly's story a few days ago - good stuff. Thankfully, I'm not trying to hoist up a mule from the bottom of a well. I'm merely trying to re-line the well after the mule clattered it's way out with kryptonite hooves - a much easier task, obviously.

So I'm banking on this being a straightforward - or more accurately, straightdownward - operation, for which I'll use a B&D and a steady hand to clean out the hole. Where the helldya get a mag base drill from anyway ??

Reading between the lines - a helicoil is 'supposed' to be stonger than the material its inserted into and your up-rated studs, I imagine would have fitted into the original holes, so....fingers and legs crossed you'll be ok.
