996 Charging problem ???????????
New battery (Varta) fitted 6 months ago,on Optimate most of the time. Took the bike for a spin today and then refueled about 3/4 from home after 50 miles . Went to start her up after filling up and nothing but a clicking at the starter relay. Checked all the connections from battery to starter motor nothing that looked bad. Ended up pushing the bike home. After 15mins on the charger she fires up.
Any one no the way to go referance , checking the charging system and things to test for. Even with a new battery the 996 is a big lump to turn over and allways sounds like Will she wont she fire. 4D

Seems to be the charging system itself, not necessarily the battery. I'd check all connections on that side too.

I'm sure someone else will be along soon who can tell you more, perhaps a U2U 2 nelly?

Good luck
Tim

Got a multi meter Pete? Run the engine and measure the voltage across the battery. 14 or so at 3000 rpm is good, much less than that then you probably have a charging problem. Check out the connector down by the battery as they tend to melt etc!

Pete, check the alternator wires behind the battery tray. 2 or 3 yellow wires. make sure the connector is clean and in good nick. I think I recall it getting a good clean about 6 months ago
Could be the problem.
Call me if you need any help
