Question New clip-ons for 900SL
Hi to all,

I bought my MkIV Superlight back in March and its slowly being sorted.

One of the things I'd like to change are the handlebars.
What I'd like to do is change the standard steel clip-ons and replace them with some nice, shiny, lightweight aluminum items like the ones Harris sells.

Will I run into clearance problems with the instruments and fairing if I mount lower clip-ons than standard?

Any advice or past experience from SS or SL owners would be welcomed.

Hi,

You could run into problems depending on the angle of the bar. I had some harris ones but they fouled the fairings as you got close to the tank. There are flatter ones but I don't find them very comfortable, so I'd recommend hunting down some angled but slightly elevated ones. The clamp still goes under the yoke but the bar ends up about level with the yoke. You may also find that the master-cyl resevoirs foul the yoke/clocks depending on placement.

Cheap option - find any alloy 50mm clipons on ebay (I've paid as little as £22)
Best option - take out a mortgage and buy the fully adjustable cyclecat ones. They're the dogs' pods.

Ali is spot-on in his summary.

LSL (look in Ebay Germany) also do a full riser kit including top yoke at reasonable prices.

I have alloy ones from Ducati-Kaemna (Germany) and they are more angled (downwards). No problems fouling fairing or tank and they feel very comfortable, except when you mount them at the lowest point, when things get a bit extreme. These fellas:

Thanks for the response fellas,

Those Cyclecat bars look good on ebay, I'll put a bid in.

As I suspected, you've confirmed the clearance problems with instruments when mounting lower bars. I don't really want to start re-positioning them by cutting and shutting the mounting frame.
The standard riding position is OK, just the actual clip-ons are poor and weigh a fair bit.

Almost the first thing I did with the bike after I bought it was register on the Superlight site. Really helpful chap with the few questions I had.

It would seem a lot of Ducatis stand idle for long periods of time and things start seizing up. I've spent a lot of time sorting minor faults out, its now time to start enjoying the brilliant handling, brakes and grunt out of corners.
