what front forks fit 900ss?
Have been speaking to Wayne @Tec-moto about the possibility of fitting 916 showas to my 96 900ss.

Has anybody tried this? I'm trying to get a sense of what would be involved (just forks? or would I have to take the whole front end). Also, any idea about the cost involved?

One set of used SBK forks from eBay - Around £80 upwards.

One set of 53 mm clipons - £100 for raised RobbyMoto ones from Busters.

Either have your top yoke bored out from 50 mm to 53 mm (which although cutting it a bit fine IMO seems to be common practice in the US) or buy a Cyclecat top yoke from the States, Spareshack or Nelly for $325.

Fiddle around with fitment a little bit and finally end up with this....

The SBK setup looks great but, does it not also mean getting a new front wheel if the spindle size is different to the previous forks? Possibly different calipers as well ???

Depending on how old your SS is you'll need to get some machining done. If you've got a late model you may well have the same size spindle as the SBKs (25mm). In that case it appears to be a straight (ish) swap. The earlier you get the more work is involved.

For example with my 96 SL I'll have to get one spacer made up for the right hand side and then I'll be able to use my own wheel. I could also buy a SBK wheel and spindle and then it should all just drop in....

Our slab sided SS's have callipers with 40mm mounting holes, the same as earlier (pre-99(?)) SBKs. The later ugly SSie's have, I believe 65mm spacings, as do later SBKs.

I'd guess it's not a job to be doing if you're not comfortable unless you get a dealer to touch your bike, but from what I've been told and seen if you're prepared to work on your bike anyway you shouldn't have any problems.

I stuck some superbike front suspenders on my 750ss.

Easy mod.. Just milled the yokes (and made some shims, and milled the clip-ons)
Local engineering shop did it for me.. cheap as chips.. and now the front end is bloody superb (Speak to Stuart @ www.spareshack.com about any milling, moding, coating etc.. he is well hooked up and very reasonable.)

Incidently my bike is for sale now....
