Not so Jolley Mallory
I am not in the best of moods to be writing this right now. But a Race report is a Race report, and there are a few positives.
First, I had been dreading Mallory, as people reading on DSC would have noticed. There are always Red flags, always fallers, nearly always broken bones and bikes. In addition, my bike doesn't seem to like the place: It threw Hugh off at Gerrards a couple of years ago, had fuel pump failure last year which led to me only completing 5 laps at a time before the bike dying, and then this year......
All the talk was of how Phil would own the place, and I knew I had to take the fight to him to prove he had a battle on his hands. Not just for this race, but for the Class B Championship (going into the season, my personal thoughts on the top 5 challengers were Phil, Kev P, Neal, Hugh and myself). I wanted to beat Phil at his home track and try to stamp some authority on my intentions for the season.
Things started well by avoiding letting anyone follow me on the practice day or the morning warm-up (I felt I gave away too much of my pace early on at Brands). Normally I like to be at the front of the pitlane for qualifying, get out on my own and just get on with things. Unfortunately plenty of others had the same idea and I ended up following Kev and Phil out of the pits. I did consider just following, but I always feel I go better when I am on my own then when I am following someone. It took me a lap to get past Kev, and in another half lap I was past Ghost with a bit of free space in front. On the third lap I set a 1m03.7s lap which unfortunately Phil had pipped by 5/100th of a second behind me. Despite this, I would have been happy starting alongside him and seeing how we went over 18 lap (only 15 were recorded, which I can only assume was a shortening due to the Red flags?).
Unfortunately, the Pie man exploded his bike all over the approach to the hairpin to halt the qualifying. A lap into the restart and all the people I had passed were coming back past me and I was short on power. Next thing, the Oil light is flickering and I pull off into the pits (a last minute swerve that almost put me on the grass!). Engine like a bag of spanners and no more games for me.
Positives were:
- I am sure I had the pace to give Phil a proper battle.
- I got to watch a couple of great races (although it was frustrating imagining where I would have been in the battle!).
- I got to watch the Pieman throw his bike around from the sidelines, and it is no understatement to say it was a bit of an inspiration and has given me a few ideas.
- Turning a positive spin on things, I am still joint first in the championship if everyone drops 2 results.
- The bike, although sick, still looks great!
- I am in one piece (gws Matt - broken collar bone)
I have no doubt this is going down to the wire this year, but if you have to drop rounds, they may as well be ones you didn't score any points for!
