Another thing about those brass screws is that they wear easily, so buy a
good quality allen key to remove them. In the past, despite using an allen of the correct nominal size, I've managed to round the hexagon. If you do that, removing them becomes a real problem.
Having said all that, they are worth persisting with, for the reasons nelly says above. If you catch a mirror on the gate-post, you'll be glad you did!
