I Love steering dampers
All my road bikes have dampers, they do far more than save tank slappers' (which they don't always!), My race bike hasn't got one, yet. I may fit one if I see one at the right price. a steering damper helps to keep the bike in line, can save tyres and makes the whole bike feel better in fast bumpy bends. Feel is quite important.

BUT, don't use one to hide a problem!
sort the problem then get one,

The 'correct' set up is to have it set as high as you can before you can feel it. I say correct loosely because this is obviously personal preference and I like to have mine as high as I can before I can't steer fast enough around tight slower corners.

This whole comment may be complete b~@ll@x but that's what I think anyway.
